Working from home is the best thing in the world & I honestly don’t think I could ever work in an office again. But it’s not without its hurdles, obstacles and pitfalls. To be productive at home takes a massive amount of will power for starters. Catch up with admin or leave it until tomorrow & instead eat the sweets the kids left out whilst watching the latest season of Orange is the new black? (Admittedly I’ve done that though with Greys Anatomy – OiTNB is on my watch list!)
There are so many distractions at home – TV, food, children, pets, partner, housework are just the start! With children at home my most productive time is obviously when they are asleep and I am longing for the end of night feeds so I can get up early in a morning instead of working late at night! But I also manage to catch snippets of time during the day. My days seem to fly over in the blink of an eye so I have been trying to observe what I do with my time and then work out how to make the most of it. Time is definitely the most precious commodity we have and it needs to be spent wisely otherwise you risk waking up an old lady whose life has whizzed by in a blur.
I have many hats to wear in a day – mummy, teacher, cook, cleaner, dog walker, entrepreneur – all of which give me a huge amount of pleasure (though maybe not the cleaning bit!) But all are big eaters of chunks of time which is where my days, weeks, months have gone so quickly! Looking at how you physically spend your day is a really good exercise to do and gives you a chance to redress any areas of your life that are out of balance. I like things to be in balance – not just because I am a bookkeeper and keeping accounts in balance is at the heart of my work, but balance is the key to a happy and healthy life – if our bodies get out of balance we get sick, if your happiness gets out of balance we get stressed. Finding ways to keep in balance is the key and it’s far easier to say than to do I know but having that notion in your head and taking little steps everyday towards achieving more balance is well worth the effort!
